Electricians in Christchurch, and how the work is signed off

Since 1 April 2019, when Christchurch Borough Council was dissolved, building control for the town has been BCP Council's job. The national rules on what needs checking carried on as before. Fitting a new consumer unit, running a complete new circuit for a cooker, shower or immersion heater, or adding points in the space around a bath or shower are all notifiable under the building regulations.

That leaves two routes. A homeowner can tell building control before work starts and have the job inspected, or use an installer registered with a competent person scheme. NAPIT is one of the schemes the government authorises for electrical work in homes, and as NAPIT-registered electricians we self-certify notifiable jobs, with all our work certified against the wiring regulations in force. Most repairs and like-for-like replacements aren't notifiable at all.

Wiring for homes on the harbour and river flood-warning streets

Parts of Christchurch sit low beside water, and the Environment Agency keeps separate flood warning areas for them. Christchurch Harbour Side covers places close to the harbour, including Mudeford, Stanpit, the Quomps and Wick, and a Dorset coast at Christchurch area covers homes behind the defences there. On the Avon, the Lower Avon at Christchurch area names Bridge Street, Stoney Lane and Monkswell Gardens in Purewell.

On the Stour, the warning area for Jumpers Common and the A35 Iford Bridge lists nineteen roads, among them River Glade, Stour Way, Hurn Way, De Redvers Court and Stourvale Avenue. Anyone living on those roads can sign up on GOV.UK for the Agency's flood warnings by text, phone or email.

Government flood advice gives moving electrical sockets higher up the wall as one way to cut the damage a flood does, and asks every household to know where the main switch on the fuse board is, since the power has to go off if you leave during a flood. When we rewire or add circuits on those streets, higher sockets and a consumer unit well clear of the floor can go into the same job.

Questions about Christchurch

Answered from what we know of Christchurch and the jobs we do here. See every answer

Yes. Burton is on our standard list, and Winkton and Hurn both sit inside BH23. Each village has its own conservation area: Burton since 1986, Winkton since 1989 and Hurn since 1991. That matters for a charger, panels or an outdoor unit on a street-facing wall far more than for indoor wiring.

If it's in the old centre, very likely. Christchurch Central, the earliest conservation area in Christchurch, dates from May 1969 and takes in the Priory precinct and the castle. The Priory and the 12th-century Constable's House, with its original round chimney, are both Grade I. New circuits rarely need planning permission, though listed homes should ask the council first.

Only when a big load is added. SSEN says many older terraced and semi-detached homes still share one service cable, a looped service, which may need splitting before a charger or heat pump goes in, often free for a typical supply.

Two sets, divided by the floor. The building regulations set electrical standards for dwellings, so notifiable work in the flat comes under them and we self-certify it, while the shop below falls under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.

Yes. SSEN's Christchurch bulk supply point serves around 41,000 customers, and its February 2026 plan includes two new 132kV circuits to it from Mannington by 2030. In September 2024 it also began replacing nearly 6km of underground cable running from Christchurch through to Boscombe. The DNO paperwork for new panels and chargers is part of our job.
