Electricians in Highcliffe for detached homes, flats and cottages

The 2021 Census gives a clear picture of Highcliffe's homes. In the Highcliffe & Walkford ward, 52% of households were in a detached house and 23% in purpose-built flats, while fewer than one in ten lived in a terrace. Most are owned rather than rented, with 59% owned outright. Where an older fuse box has no RCD protection, a consumer unit upgrade with RCD and RCBO protection is part of our electrical work.

Steamer Point, Chewton and Walkford are covered from the same Airfield Way unit as the village itself. Highcliffe and Walkford form a single parish within BCP Council, so building control and planning questions for a job here go to the same council that handles them in Christchurch.

Thatch and listed walls in Highcliffe's two conservation areas

Some of Highcliffe's oldest homes sit in the Bramble Lane conservation area, just north of Chewton Common Road, running from the eastern side of Chewton Common to Chewton Way. The neighbourhood plan counts nine thatched cottages there, typically in cream roughcast, six of them Grade II listed and the oldest once part of an 18th-century hamlet; Historic England's entry for Yew Cottage records cob beneath the render. The plan also notes that the gravel tracks can make vehicle access difficult.

The other is Verno Lane, a rural enclave around 19th-century Verno House, and close by on Roeshot Hill stands The Thatch, a Grade II listed cottage of the 18th and 19th centuries. Bramble Lane was designated in 1982 and Verno Lane in 1988. New circuits don't generally need planning permission, but the Planning Portal advises anyone in a listed building to speak to the council before work starts.

Local Questions

Questions about Highcliffe

Answered from what we know of Highcliffe and the jobs we do here. See every answer

No. Barton on Sea and New Milton are in New Forest District Council's area, which adopted its own design guidance for both places in 2010; Highcliffe and Walkford parish is BCP. It only matters when solar panels, a car charger or an outdoor air conditioning unit needs permission, because that decides which council the application goes to.

The castle on Rothesay Drive is Grade I listed. The listing covers the castle and older structures within its curtilage, not the homes around it.

Not inside your home. The plan passed its referendum on 15 December 2022 and BCP Council made it on 10 January 2023. Its policies shape new building, green spaces and the High Street, including keeping bungalows and two-storey houses the main pattern north of Lymington Road, east of Roeshot Hill. Rewiring and new circuits sit outside it.

Yes. SSEN, whose network serves the BCP area, runs a free Priority Services Register open to anyone over 60, people who rely on medical equipment powered by electricity and others needing extra support, and family can sign someone up.

Yes. Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue offers owners of thatched homes a free Safe & Well visit. It says thatch carries no extra risk of catching fire, but a fire's impact is far greater, typically drawing more than 50 firefighters. Its thatch leaflet asks that any electrical, gas or building work is done by a registered engineer.
