Electrician in Ringwood: wiring behind the old market-town fronts

Ringwood's market charter dates back to 1226, and much of the old centre is protected. New Forest District Council's 2003 appraisal dates the first conservation area designation here to 1970, when it took in just the plots along Market Place, High Street, West Street, Christchurch Road and part of Southampton Road. It grew in 1983 to take in Bickerley Common, The Furlong and The Quomp, College Road was added in 1993, and the whole boundary was reviewed in 1999.

The Ringwood Neighbourhood Plan, made in 2024, counts 114 nationally listed buildings in the parish, and the government's planning data puts 72 national list entries within the conservation area boundary. Many older buildings, the plan notes, began as timber-framed thatched cottages and were later re-roofed and faced in masonry, three of them in mathematical tiles. The appraisal offers Old Bank House in the Market Place as an example: a front thought to have been refaced in 1801, with a timber-framed rear wing at least two centuries older.

So a brick front can hide a timber frame, changing where cables run and what a fitting can be fixed to. On a listed building, alterations that change its special architectural or historic character need consent under section 7 of the 1990 Listed Buildings Act, and section 9 makes going ahead without it an offence. New Forest District Council decides consent as the town centre's planning authority, and is also the building control authority for Ringwood homes. Any consent comes before rewiring an older house is planned.

Across the town, the housing changes ward by ward. At the 2021 Census, 70.8% of households in Ringwood East and Sopley lived in detached houses, as did 48.7% in Ringwood North, while Ringwood South had 22.7% in purpose-built flats and 23.6% renting privately. Electric-only central heating served 16.6% of Ringwood South households against 2.0% in Ringwood North, so in about one home in six there the heating itself hangs on the consumer unit and its circuits.

Building on the Avon's floodplain: wiring for Ringwood's lower streets

The town stands where the River Avon could be forded and later bridged, and the neighbourhood plan places most of modern Ringwood on a gravel terrace on the river's eastern floodplain. The council's appraisal describes the conservation area as almost level, rising very little above that floodplain, and Bickerley Common as liable to flood. The plan also puts the Market Place in Flood Zone 2, which national planning guidance defines as land with between a 1% and 0.1% annual probability of river flooding.

Two of the Environment Agency's flood warning areas are drawn tightly around Ringwood streets. Lower Avon at Ringwood Town lists Kingsby Lane, Bickerley Terrace, West Street, Riverside, Lynes Lane, Strides Lane and Market Place, among others, and the second includes The Bridges, Watermead, Three Bridges, Avon Edge and Stubbings Meadow Caravan Park. A warning there means the Agency expects some property to flood. A severe warning signals danger to life, and anyone in immediate danger should call 999.

Wiring can be planned with that water in mind. Flood-resilient construction guidance published by the government in 2007, from research run with the Environment Agency, puts meters above the predicted flood level, keeps ground-floor sockets above it too, and runs ring mains at first-floor level with drops down to the ground-floor sockets and switches. It was written for new buildings, but when a ground floor on Lynes Lane or Strides Lane is being rewired anyway, feeding cables down from above follows the same idea.

When those streets get a warning, GOV.UK's flood guidance is to shut off the supplies, power included, only where that is safe, and to keep hands off any switch if your feet are in water. Once the water has gone, the power stays off until a qualified person has looked it over. Testing circuits that sat in floodwater is part of an electrical condition report, while a power cut, a damaged supply cable or any other hazard on the network goes to SSEN, the network operator, on 105.

The Avon Valley Path follows the river for 34 miles from Salisbury to Christchurch Priory, and Christchurch, where our unit is, sits at its southern end. Ringwood is one town along that valley. Upstream we also cover rewiring and inspections in Fordingbridge, and west over the Dorset border we handle electrical repairs and lighting in Wimborne. In each of them, everything we do as electricians applies, from a circuit breaker that keeps tripping to new lighting and full rewires.

Questions about Ringwood

Answered from what we know of Ringwood and the jobs we do here. See every answer

It's New Forest District Council's job. The Building Act makes the council of the district a house stands in its building control authority, and Ringwood lies in New Forest district. Planning differs: the Park's own authority handles applications inside its boundary, and the rest of the parish, the town centre included, is the district council's.

Four, according to the neighbourhood plan: St Peter and St Paul's, the parish church, along with the Ringwood Meeting House, Bridge House and the Manor House. The council's appraisal calls the severely plain Meeting House of 1727, built away from the main streets, a rare and valuable part of the national history of Nonconformism.

Quite possibly. The council's appraisal finds cores older than the 18th century inside later buildings, naming 10 High Street (a 16th-century timber frame), The Original White Hart Inn and the Star Inn in the Market Place, and Monmouth House in West Street. A hidden frame decides where cables can safely run and what will hold a fixing.

At the 2021 Census nearly a quarter of households in Ringwood South ward were private tenants. GOV.UK's guidance after a flood is that your landlord is responsible for repairs to a rented home with flood damage, and it points tenants to Citizens Advice for further help.

SSEN describes a multi-million-pound upgrade of the Ringwood area's network: new transformers and equipment inside substations, and new underground cables pulled through ducts laid in the road. It writes to residents and businesses on each affected road in turn. The wiring from your consumer unit onwards is the part we work on.
