EV Charger Installations

Home EV charger installations across Christchurch usually start with the same question: where's the car parked, and how far is that from the consumer unit. Electrical Exchange is based right here on Airfield Way, covering Christchurch itself plus Highcliffe, Mudeford and Burton, so that question gets answered at a free on-site survey.

Where you park matters more for an EV charger installation than the postcode itself. On-street parking or a short driveway, more common on Christchurch's Saxon-era town-centre streets, changes where a charger can be sited and how far the cable run has to travel back to the consumer unit. A dedicated driveway or garage, more typical of the town's later housing further out, usually makes for a simpler dedicated-circuit install. Either way, a free survey establishes which situation applies to you rather than guessing from the address.

As electric vehicles become mainstream, our certified technicians ensure seamless integration of EV charging points at residential properties. Whether you need a single home charging station or multiple charging points for your property, we deliver quality service with a commitment to environmental stewardship and technological innovation - guiding you through the entire process and supporting you for years to come.

EV charger installation for Christchurch homes that park on the street

Most households across Christchurch Town ward have a car: at the 2021 Census, 80% had at least one car or van, and a third had two or more. Yet half the ward's households live in a terrace or a purpose-built flat, where a drive isn't a given, and BCP Council's policy is not to allow charging cables across pavements, whether trailing, under a heavy-duty cover or on an overhead gantry.

A way round it is on trial. In July 2025 the council agreed to trial charging gullies set into the footway: a channel just below the pavement surface carries the cable from the house to the car. The trial is for residents with no off-street parking, householders pay for their own installation, and it has to meet criteria the council has set. A policy for gullies is to follow once the trial has run.

Whichever way the car is reached, the charger itself has to be smart. Since 30 June 2022, home charge points sold in Great Britain have had to come with pre-set off-peak charging hours, which the owner can accept, remove or change, and a randomised delay, part of rules meant to help the grid cope with the extra demand from electric cars. Those defaults are worth checking with us when the charger is commissioned. For homes without a driveway, our guide to on-street EV charging across BCP explains the council's gully trial and the front-wall charger rules, and if a three-pin lead is all you have for now, we compare a granny charger with a wallbox.

Solar & air conditioning

While up on the roof, they noticed several cracked tiles and immediately pointed them out to me, suggesting I get them fixed while the scaffolding was already set up. Rather than rushing to finish their own job, they kindly put their work on hold so I could get the roof repaired. … Finding a trade company with this degree of honesty, integrity, and punctuality is rare.

Help & Answers

EV Chargers in Christchurch: What To Know

A starting point - get in touch if your question isn't answered here. See every answer

Yes, the whole town. We're based on Airfield Way in Christchurch, and Highcliffe, Mudeford and Burton are covered as standard too, with nothing extra added to the quote for being local to us.

A change to the rules in May 2025 means most home EV chargers no longer need a planning application, as they now fall under permitted development, but that doesn't automatically extend to listed buildings or homes inside one of Christchurch's conservation areas. Your specific property gets checked as part of the free survey, not assumed from a general rule.

If anything it tends to be quicker. We're not driving in from outside the area, so booking a Christchurch survey doesn't have a travel allowance built into it the way it might with an installer based further out. Get in touch and we'll find a slot that works.

Most home installations need a dedicated parking space near your consumer unit, which is more straightforward on the driveways common in Christchurch's newer housing than on some of the older streets nearer the town centre. If you're not sure your property qualifies, we'll confirm at the free survey and talk through options like Andersen or myenergi's zappi depending on what suits your setup.

Yes, that's covered. The engineers who survey and install your charger are the same ones you'd call afterwards, not a subcontractor who's moved on to the next job.

Rather talk it through?

Speak to the team who'd do the work - no sales reps, no pressure.
