Turn Surplus Solar into Free Hot Water

Maximise your self-consumption with an intelligent energy diverter.

Solar panels generate plenty of power that Christchurch homes never actually get to use, most of it exported to the grid for a fraction of its value. An energy diverter fixes that, redirecting the surplus straight into your hot water instead of sending it away. We fit them for solar households across Christchurch, Highcliffe, Mudeford and Burton.

Whether your solar panels went in on one of the older streets near the Priory or a roof from the town's later expansion further out, a diverter works the same way regardless of the property. It wires in at your consumer unit rather than depending on roof type, pitch or age, so a Victorian terrace and a newer build out towards Burton are equally straightforward.

Advantages of Energy Diverters

Installing an energy diverter offers immediate benefits for any residential property with solar PV. By monitoring your energy generation in real-time, these devices ensure that no "spare" electricity goes to waste - instead of buying energy from the grid to heat your water, you use what you've already generated for free.

  • Reduced Energy BillsDrastically lower your heating costs.
  • Boiler LongevityReduce the strain on your primary heating system during the sunnier months.
  • Smart IntegrationSeamlessly works with your existing solar panels and immersion tank.

Solar diverters in Christchurch and when the spare power turns up

Christchurch gets well above the UK's average sunshine. The Met Office climate station at Hurn, in the Christchurch area, recorded an average of 1,779 hours of sunshine a year between 1991 and 2020, against 1,403 for the UK as a whole. That extra sunshine is what a diverter runs on: power your panels make that the house can't use right then, sent to the immersion heater rather than exported.

It doesn't arrive evenly. May, June and July each averaged more than 220 hours of sunshine at Hurn, with July the brightest at 234, while December managed 61, barely a quarter of July's figure. So a diverter does most of its work from late spring through summer and has far less to work with in midwinter, when the boiler or an immersion timer does most of the heating.

Your own daytime use comes first. A diverter only takes what would otherwise be exported, so a household that's home all day, running the washing machine and dishwasher off the panels, leaves less over for the cylinder than one that's empty until the evening. That's why daytime habits come into the conversation alongside the inverter and immersion heater when we look at your setup. It's the same conversation on our diverter installs across Poole.

Keeping the cylinder hot enough on grey days

Hot water has a temperature floor. The Health and Safety Executive's legionella guidance is that hot water should be stored at 60°C or above to kill the bacteria, and a diverter can only deliver what the panels spare. On a dull December day that may leave the cylinder short of 60°C, so the existing boiler timer or immersion boost stays in charge of the minimum.

Diverting is also a trade against exporting. Under the Smart Export Guarantee, which Ofgem has overseen since it began in January 2020, suppliers set their own export rates, contract lengths and terms, with rates only required to be above zero, and payments are worked out from export meter readings. Every unit sent to the cylinder is a unit not paid for at that rate, so your tariff belongs in the decision.

The cylinder decides how long the sun's heat lasts. According to the Energy Saving Trust, new hot water cylinders come factory insulated to keep water at temperature for longer, and that full insulation stops heat escaping. Heat banked from the panels in the early afternoon needs to survive until the evening's baths and showers, so the state of the cylinder's insulation is worth a look before a diverter goes in.

Solar & air conditioning

While up on the roof, they noticed several cracked tiles and immediately pointed them out to me, suggesting I get them fixed while the scaffolding was already set up. Rather than rushing to finish their own job, they kindly put their work on hold so I could get the roof repaired. … Finding a trade company with this degree of honesty, integrity, and punctuality is rare.

Yes. A diverter works alongside an existing solar PV system. If you don't have solar yet, that's the starting point, not the diverter itself.

It monitors your solar generation in real time and redirects any surplus straight to your immersion heater instead of exporting it to the grid, heating your hot water for free rather than buying it back later.
