The Energy Saving Trust's boiler guidance explains why that isn't a given: combi boilers don't use a cylinder at all, system boilers keep one, and having a cylinder is what lets a home store energy from its panels. So the first question about any house is what, if anything, sits in the airing cupboard.
Census 2021 shows how much that varies from one ward to the next. In Broadstone, 86.6% of households heated their homes with mains gas alone and just 3.6% with electricity alone. In Poole Town ward, electric-only central heating covered 24.5% of households, more than double the BCP-wide 11.6%, with Parkstone at 15.7%. Gas on its own tells us nothing about the cylinder, since combis and system boilers both burn it, so we look rather than assume.
Timing shapes what a diverter does. For a roof pitched at 35 degrees in the middle of town, PVGIS puts just over two-thirds of a south-facing array's yearly output between April and September, and about three-quarters for an array facing east or west. Most of the diverting therefore happens in the warmer half of the year, when hot water would otherwise come from the boiler or an overnight timer alone.
Electrically heated homes are the natural fit. National Energy Action's guidance notes that if your hot water is heated by electricity there will be an immersion heater in the cylinder, often a twin-element type on an Economy 7 or 10 tariff that heats the tank overnight. A diverter adds daytime heating from the roof to that routine, provided the panels feed your own supply.
A house heated by a combi has nowhere for the surplus to go as hot water, but the energy can still be used. A battery holds it for the evening, and some EV chargers can top up the car with surplus from the roof instead; we install both kinds of equipment.
