Each room or zone is controlled independently, so you can cool a bedroom to the right temperature for sleeping in summer, keep a room comfortable for pets while you're out during the day, or take the chill off a lounge in winter, without heating or cooling the rest of the house.

An air-to-air heat pump system is made up of a small number of key components, each playing a specific role in getting heating and cooling into your home efficiently.
The outdoor unit sits outside the property and transfers heat in or out as needed. Refrigerant piping connects this to one or more indoor units, each installed in the room or zone it serves. A thermostat or zone controller then gives you precise, room-by-room control over temperature.

UKHSA's hot-weather guidance now places everyone aged 65 and over in its higher-risk group, lowered from 75, and its advice for anyone showing signs of heat exhaustion includes moving to a cooler place such as a room with air conditioning.
One cool room can be a modest installation: one indoor unit on the bedroom or sitting-room wall and a single outdoor unit, with the same system providing heat through the winter. Other rooms can be added later as systems of their own, so nothing has to be decided for the whole house at once. Flats make up most of the same ward's housing, with 55.4% of its households in purpose-built blocks when the census was taken. The Leasehold Advisory Service names external walls as something the landlord may own, and warns that permission may still be needed under the lease even when planning permission is already in place. For a flat, the outdoor unit's position should be agreed with the freeholder or managing agent before a bracket goes up.
Sea air is the other factor. Daikin's installer guidance for its split systems says an outdoor unit should not be exposed to direct sea winds, because salt in the air causes corrosion that can shorten its life. It recommends placing the unit away from those winds, behind the building for example, or fitting a windbreaker at least one and a half times the unit's height, with service space left clear.
